James Ingram was born on February 16, 1952, in Akron, Ohio, to Alistine and Henry Ingram. He was interested in music at an early age and became a self-taught musician, inspired by his musical idol, jazz organist Jimmy Smith. He attended Akron's East High School and received a track scholarship to the University of Akron, but he left town to pursue his musical career in Los Angeles with his band, Revelation Funk.
